But the ground you&#8217;ll walk on has been shaped by far more than the thirty years we&#8217;ve welcomed guests here. Glaciers carved these hills. Reindeer herders used this land for fishing, hunting and early reindeer herding from at least the 1500s. A war ran straight through it in 1940&#8217;s and everything got rebuilt in the following decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t<div class=\"grid items-center gap-8 pb-10 sm:grid-cols-2 sm:gap-12 sm:pb-16\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"min-w-0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"eyebrow\">Stone Age<\/p>\t\t\t<h2 class=\"font-serif text-2xl text-night sm:text-3xl\">A landscape older than the maps<\/h2>\t\t\t<div class=\"prose prose-lg mt-4 text-night\/80\"><p>The hills and ridges around the park weren&#8217;t always here in this shape \u2014 they&#8217;re glacier-formed, part of the same ancient, undisturbed forest and bog landscape now protected in Salla National Park next door. People found their way onto this land almost as soon as the ice retreated. That rhythm, following the reindeer through the seasons, is the same rhythm you&#8217;ll be introduced to on a reindeer safari or in the K\u00f6ssi Reindeer Program today. Finnish settlers arrived later, clearing slash-and-burn meadows and building hay barns along the streams \u2014 traces of both ways of life still survive in the landscape. The municipality itself carried the name Kuolaj\u00e4rvi until 1936, when it was renamed Salla.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"mt-6 border-l-2 border-aurora bg-aurora\/15 py-3 pl-5\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font-serif text-lg italic leading-snug text-night\">The same rhythm you&#039;ll be introduced to on a reindeer safari today.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"grid items-center gap-8 pb-10 sm:grid-cols-2 sm:gap-12 sm:pb-16\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"min-w-0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"eyebrow\">1939\u20131944<\/p>\t\t\t<h2 class=\"font-serif text-2xl text-night sm:text-3xl\">A border drawn by war<\/h2>\t\t\t<div class=\"prose prose-lg mt-4 text-night\/80\"><p>Salla&#8217;s location on the eastern edge of Finland made it a front line, not once but twice. When the Soviet Union attacked in November 1939, the border here was held by little more than a reinforced field patrol \u2014 yet the front stabilised west of what is now Salla village and held until the war&#8217;s end. During the Continuation War, Finnish and German forces fought to retake the ceded territory. When the fighting stopped, Finland lost close to half of pre-war Salla \u2014 around 5,000 square kilometres and nine eastern villages \u2014 to the Soviet Union under the Moscow Peace Treaty. Its marks are still visible on the northern Salla fells: bare rock, fire-scarred trunks, and a forest that is, in places, still visibly younger than the &#8220;ancient&#8221; woodland just beyond it. It&#8217;s a reminder that even a landscape that looks eternal is still being written.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"grid items-center gap-8 pb-10 sm:grid-cols-2 sm:gap-12 sm:pb-16\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"min-w-0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"eyebrow\">1996\u2013Today<\/p>\t\t\t<h2 class=\"font-serif text-2xl text-night sm:text-3xl\">Thirty years of Lappish hospitality<\/h2>\t\t\t<div class=\"prose prose-lg mt-4 text-night\/80\"><p>Salla Wilderness Park has its own, much shorter history layered on top of all that. What started around 1996 as Sallan osuuskunta Jotos \u2014 a local cooperative offering tourism services as Sallan Poropuisto (Salla Reindeer Park) to Finnish and international visitors \u2014 has grown into Salla Wilderness Park Oy, now the region&#8217;s nature experience hub and the gateway to Salla National Park. Three decades on, the reindeer herd, the trails and the kotas are still run by people from Salla, for people willing to travel to the middle of nowhere to meet
